Cecil County is in the northeast corner of Maryland, south of the Pennsylvania line and west of the Delaware line. Cecil County is physically divided in two by the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. . According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 418 square miles, of which 348 square miles is land and 70 square miles 16% is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 85,951 people, 31,223 households, and 23,292 families residing in the county. The population density was 247 people per square mile . There were 34,461 housing units at an average density of 99 per square mile.
